Errorless Learning: Setting Students Up for Success
Ahhh, this technique has saved me many times when I know I am about to start teaching a difficult task to a student. I can use this technique to introduce smaller steps to the bigger task, so my kiddo isn't frustrated right from the start. I also use this method when we come back from a longer break and I know some students may need to build up some behavioral momentum to get going again.
Let’s take a look at this technique.
What is Errorless Learning?
A teaching method where students learn without making mistakes
Teachers provide full support at the start
Gradually reduce help as students gain confidence
Creates a positive learning environment
Builds student self-esteem through success
Step 1: Full Support Phase
Start by showing the correct answer
Model the complete solution
Guide students through each step
Use visual aids and prompts
Example: Show multiplication fact 4×3=12 4×3=12 and have students repeat
Step 2: Fading Support
Slowly remove assistance
Wait longer before helping
Let students attempt more steps alone
Keep track of student progress
Celebrate small victories
Step 3: Independent Practice
Students work independently
Teacher monitors for success
Provide quick support if needed
Return to more support if struggles occur
Build confidence through mastery
Tips for Success
Start with simple tasks
Break skills into small steps
Use clear, consistent language
Maintain a positive attitude
Give specific praise for effort
